The ‘Space Chassis’.
The ‘space’ chassis was designed for Reliant and built in Germany with the body parts being produced in Britain by both Reliant and Dunlop. Unlike other Reliant’s most body panels are made from injection moulded polyurethane giving style and limited impact resistance that would self right following minor impacts. A body panel production process used by many modern manufacturers today as an industry standard.
The initial production run produced steel frame chassis that were corrosion protected by paint and Waxoil™, however from around chassis 700 to 900 on both models Galvanisation was used in common with other models in the Reliant stable.
Production halted in February 1990 with just 1507 production car having been made.
According to some sources, there probably are only a few hundred still on the road i.e. running about. There are perhaps another few hundred being restored but most are scrapped or broken as donors to rebuild another one or the dreaded ‘Kit Car’ that simply cannibalises and uses the chassis and running gear to make a unique car.
As if they are not unique enough already?
